Clutter Scavenger Hunt

I’m in a bit of a decluttering mood, so I propose a scavenger hunt. The point is to find items with which you can cheerfully remove from your life (of course, you should actually complete the removal).

Here are my arbitrary rules:

  • Each item counts for one point
  • Up to two items per category (feel free to toss more items, but you only get points for two)
  • You must be able to get rid of them cheerfully
  • Individuals or small teams may participate

Here are the categories:

  • A book you’ve never gotten around to reading
  • An item of clothing that doesn’t fit
  • Any item still in its original packaging (tags on clothing count)
  • Pieces of a project you keep putting off
  • Something in bad condition
  • An item of a color you dislike
  • An office supply purchased in bulk that you only use occasionally
  • A piece of obsolete technology
  • Something in a box you haven’t unpacked since your last move
  • Something advertising products you don’t intend to purchase
  • Something with an unpleasant odor
  • An item that has served its purpose
  • A seasonal item that missed its last season
  • A tool that doesn’t get used
  • Something you could buy again for $5 if you really missed it

Think outside the box (or in a box like the computer or refridgerator). You can also get bonus points for coming up with good categories or taking an item you want to keep out of one of these categories (unpacking a box, reading a book, finishing a project, etc.). Share your points in the comments; highlights would be great too. If you want to share pictures, e-mail me (my first name at this domain), and I’ll consider them for the update I hope to give next week.
